NBOA Gives Back

Ansley School

Each year, NBOA joins forces with a charitable organization to give back to a community in need. For this year's meeting, NBOA has teamed up with The Boyce L. Ansley School.

The Boyce L. Ansley School is a tuition-free private school for children experiencing homelessness. Located in downtown Atlanta, our program is the only one of its kind in the Southeast. We serve 63 students between the ages of 4 and 10 in kindergarten through 4th grade. 100% of our students have experienced some form of homelessness or housing instability.

A child’s well-being and educational success are frequently the collateral damage of homelessness. Children experiencing homelessness tend to relocate and change schools frequently, sometimes missing days or months of instruction. This transience, along with trauma, lack of sleep, inadequate nutrition and other related issues, severely affect their academic performance. Our program addresses the unique traumas associated with experiencing homelessness.

We can only educate students effectively if the whole family is supported and has the healthiest home life possible. Parents are required to attend at least one of our Monthly Parent Workshops and make sure their children maintain a minimum of 80% attendance. Our Social Services Department makes it possible for us to provide a holistic approach to education.

Last year 24% of our families gained stable employment and housing by the end of the school year. This year we are looking to increase our capacity and assist families beyond emergent and basic needs. We strive for a parent program that offers scholarships, homeownership assistance and professional skills training to truly reverse the cycle of poverty and gives their family the opportunity to soar beyond their current circumstances.
