HR Self-Audit with Culture Meets Compliance

What are your school's highest priorities regarding human resources compliance? What are your greatest risks? How do you know what you don't know? HR Self-Audit is a three-week online course designed to help you assess current practices, identify risks and prioritize your strategies for improvement in human resources administration and compliance. Designed for both business officers who have oversight and responsibility for human resources as well as human resources professionals, this course will help you develop an understanding in key areas of federal human resources compliance and be empowered with the knowledge and tools to conduct a self-assessment of your school's human resources practices and policies.

Using NBOA's Culture Meets Compliance publication (an interactive assessment tool), in addition to a variety of resources including videos, articles, recorded webinars, case studies and discussion boards, you will discover tools for ongoing operational support. In addition, you will establish a national learning community of peers with whom you can continue to explore the concepts discussed in the course. Topics include: hiring and recruitment; OSHA safety and security; I-9 compliance; document retention and destruction; wage payment practices and policies; exempt/non-exempt classifications; disabilities and reasonable accommodation; family and medical leave; and employee handbooks.

This course is being offered in partnership between NBOA and One Schoolhouse.

Course Schedule

Week 1

General Compliance

Get an overview of the general laws that schools must comply with, including employment discrimination laws, I-9 compliance, OSHA and safety standards, document retention and destruction practices, and whistleblower policies. Go beyond the basics of recruitment and hiring and learn requirements and best practices in the application process, effective interviewing and screening, and industry standards for conducting thorough criminal background checks.

Week 2

Leave, Accommodations and Compensation

Evaluate your school's compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, and related areas. Learn steps to take in response to an employee's request for leave or need for a reasonable accommodation based on a disability. Take a deep dive into the FMLA, including special rules for instructional employees. Review your school's pay practices and policies, including proper classification of employees, understanding independent contractors, volunteers and interns, and the proper payment of overtime.

Week 3

Performance Management and Employee Handbooks

Employee handbooks and sound policies lay the foundation for successful employee performance and engagement. In this week of the course, you'll learn the keys to successful performance management strategies that are both fair to the employee and help schools mitigate risk. Review a handbook checklist and sample policies to consider whether your guidelines comply with the legal requirements, meet standards of best practice, and promote your school's mission and culture.
